A group of six Cuban migrants arrived in the Cayman Islands on Sunday in a rowboat after traveling at least 200 kilometers, the Cayman Islands Customs and Border Control Service (CBC) reported on Facebook.
This security body confirmed that the rafters arrived on the island of Cayman Brac at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Sunday. The group consisted of five men and one woman who went down to the Spot Bay area, where the CBC agents went.
According to the picture distributed by the authorities, the boat used by the Cubans to power it does not have an engine or a sail. It only has forks where the oars normally rest. Made of wood and metal, the boat looks like it was made at home.
The CBC concluded its brief statement by saying that all Cubans were “processed by established protocols.”
Cubans also continue to use their most classic sea route: crossing the Straits of Florida to reach the United States. The Coast Guard of that country (USCG in English) brought home a group of six rafts on Monday who left Cuba illegally.
“The crew of the ship Isaac Mayo returned six migrants to Cuba on Monday after an interception near Key Largo, Florida. Agents continue to patrol the ocean to rescue and repatriate anyone attempting to migrate at sea,” the USCG said in a statement.
For its part, the Cuban Ministry of the Interior reported that those deported “left the country illegally on Friday.” In the first 15 days of the year, the USCG returned 63 irregular migrants to the island.

On the other hand, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) indicated that the automatic and free extension of the uninterrupted stay abroad for Cuban nationals remains in force until further notice.
This measure applies to Cubans who have been abroad for more than 24 months “without implying the loss of resident status.” in the national territory,” he reported on Red Social X Ernesto Soberón, the general director of Consular Affairs and Cuban Resident Abroad at MINREX.
Extending the time Cubans can stay outside the country is a measure established during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its objective is to maintain the residence of those who, due to bureaucratic reasons, have not been able to update their travel passport or those who are stranded in countries without air connections to the island during the pandemic.
