“Sammys” Showcase Top Student-Athletes

Track and field standouts Courtney Lines and Josh Parks were voted UNCW’s outstanding student-athletes for the 2022-23 year and tennis stars Davide Innocenti and Zoe Hoffman collected top academic honors during The Sammys on Monday night at Trask Coliseum.
 
The event, organized and conducted by Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) members, featured awards in various categories, including several individual and team awards. Nominations were solicited from the program’s student-athletes, coaches and staff and voted on by the 350 student-athletes.
 
Lines, from Leland, N.C., enjoyed a stellar indoor season and carried that over to the outdoor campaign as a member of the women’s track and field team. She won the long jump title at the inaugural CAA Indoor Championships and ranked 18th in the NCAA in the event. She has three event wins this spring, including the long jump title at the Bob Davidson Memorial and Trojan Relays.
 
Parks, from Kannapolis, N.C., is one of the top hurdlers in the land and has racked up five event wins this spring. He won the 110 and 400 Meter Hurdles at the USC Open two weeks again, setting a school record in the 110H with a time of 13.75.
 
Innocenti led the Seahawks to their third consecutive Colonial Athletic Association men’s tennis championship over the weekend while earning high honors in the Cameron School of Business. The Florence, Italy, resident earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance last spring and is completing his MBA in International Business.
 
Huffman, from Maiden, N.C., helped the women’s tennis team advance to the championship match of the CAA Championship in Williamsburg while excelling in the classroom. She is also a graduate student, graduating last May with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health. She is finishing up her Master’s Degree in Business Analytics.
 
In addition to the student-athlete awards, Yona Bar Zeev was named recipient of the William J. Brooks Distinguished Service Award for his work with the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Over the last 20 years, he has organized events that have netted more than $100,000 for the programs and continues to serve as a mentor with current and former players.
