Gerald Coetzee with the ball (4/44) and then Rassie van der Dussen with the bat (76*) starred in South Africa’s five-wicket win against Afghanistan on Friday, November 10 in match 42 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With this win, the Proteas moved to 14 points from nine games to end the league stage of the World Cup. They will now face Australia in the semi-final which in all likelihood will be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Chasing the target of 245 to win, the Proteas stuttered but eventually got through with 15 balls to spare even as Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi put pressure on them through quality spin bowling.

Earlier Azmatullah Omarzai scored a brilliant 97* to guide Afghanistan to 244 after they were left struggling at 116/6 at one point in time. Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas as he finished with career-best figures of 4/44 in his 10 overs

The toss between South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma and Afghanistan’s Hashamtullah Shahidi was won by the latter who decided to bat first, hoping for spin from the wicket in the second innings. While Afghanistan made no changes to the playing 11 that faced the wrath of Glenn Maxwell in the last match, South Africa made two changes to their side from the match against India. They have rested Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi and brought in Andile Phehlukwayo and Gerald Coetzee into the playing 11.
