Ryanair has expanded its partnership with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supplier Neste in an effort to power its full schedule of flights from Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport with a 40 per cent SAF blend.
The move, effective since 1 April, will see the low-cost carrier ‘significantly increase’ its SAF blend from a third of its Amsterdam flights to the entire operation. The airline currently operates 28 weekly flights to Dublin, Ireland and five weekly flights to Malaga, Spain from the Netherlands hub airport.
Ryanair director of sustainability, Thomas Fowler, said increasing SAF usage is “a fundamental pillar” of the carrier’s Pathway to Net Zero by 2050 decarbonisation strategy, adding the new partnership will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Ryanair’s flights from Amsterdam Airport by 32 per cent.
“We look forward to continuing our growing partnership with Neste as we further progress our goal of operating 12.5 per cent of Ryanair flights with SAF by 2030,” he said.
Neste’s EMEA vice president, renewable aviation, Alexander Küper, said decarbonising aviation “is more important than ever”, with the company planning to increase its SAF production capability to 1.5 million tons per year by the end of 2023.
