Princess Mary’s nephew is the talk of Sydney. Count Nikolai of Monpezat has put his rising fame in the modelling industry aside to study in Australia.
Count Nikolai of Monpezat, the nephew of beloved Australian-born Princess Mary of Denmark, was spotted out and about in Sydney over the weekend.
The 23-year-old, who was previously known as Prince Nikolai of Denmark before his royal title was revoked last year, travelled here to study at The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) at the start of the month.
The grandson of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark was spotted grabbing a coffee in the CBD with a friend on Saturday, who appears to be wearing a sports coaching uniform for Barker College on Sydney’s north shore.
The Count was wearing a brown leather jacket, beige pants, blue knitted jumper and sneakers as the pair smiled and laughed while chatting and strolling around Ultimo.
The eldest son of Prince Joachim and nephew of Danish Crown Prince Frederik chose to make Australia his new temporary home alongside his glamorous Danish girlfriend Benedikte Thoustrup.
The seventh-in-line for the Danish throne will study in the harbour city until November 30, after putting his rising fame in the modelling industry to the side to pursue a master’s degree in economics and business administration – brand and communications management.
He will also celebrate his 24th birthday here at the end of this month.
The study is part of an exchange program partnership between UTS and Copenhagen Business School, where the loved-up Danish couple study, with the young duo visiting Paris for a semester prior to heading to Australia as part of the program.
His travels to Australia follow in the footsteps of his father, who moved to Australia in the 1980s to work on a farm in Wagga Wagga post high-school graduation.
The Count was stripped of his title in January as part of the slimming down of the royal family, in a move which sent shockwaves through the country.
The young royal’s aunt, Tasmanian-born Princess Mary, famously met Prince Frederik in Sydney during the 2000 Olympic Games, before later marrying in 2004.
