Typical rockets fly at about Mach 3, while hypersonics travel at a minimum of Mach 5, about 3,800mph, or five times the speed of sound.

As well as being incredibly fast, they have an unpredictable flight path that makes them hard to track. Weapons developed by the Kremlin include the 3M22 Zircon, an anti-ship missile described by Mr Putin as “invincible” in 2018. It was tested last year by a Russian warship.

China reportedly fired a hypersonic projectile around the globe in a test in 2021.

Cohort is developing an array of large, rapid-fire vehicles which can be directed towards these deadly missiles and jam them.

“We see this as being maybe the most serious threat for anyone who might be facing Russian or Chinese forces at sea,” he said. “We’re talking to potential customers about the initial applications for it.”

Other opportunities are in anti-drone technology, he said.
