Revolut users spent 4% more while abroad this summer when compared to the same time last year, new data show.
In July and August, Irish customers spent the most amount of money overseas in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Greece, Australia and Croatia were the top.
The amount spent differed hugely based on the destination.
For example, the average holidaymaker in Greece, Turkey and Croatia spent less than last summer.
However, the data suggests that those visiting Portugal, Malta, the UK and Cyprus may have been stung by inflation.
The average Irish consumer visiting Portugal spent over 8% more than last summer, while those visiting Malta spent almost 9% more and those holidaying in the UK spent over 10% more.
In the middle of the pack was Australia, Italy, Spain and France, where prices increased between 2-5%.
Despite holidaymakers seeing prices increase more in some destinations as compared to others, the data suggests that Irish consumers did not let that dictate where they traveled to.
Although the average holidaymaker spent less in Croatia this summer, the number of Irish holidaymakers spending there dropped by almost 10% compared to last year.
Meanwhile, the average holidaymaker spent much more in Cyprus this summer, yet the destination still saw the number of Irish holidaymakers spending in the country increase by over 30%.
The data shows that some countries saw a big jump in the number of Irish holidaymakers visiting this summer compared to last – including Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Despite the increase in Irish holidaymakers, the Revolut data suggests staying in Japan and Vietnam was more expensive than last summer.
Irish holidaymakers in Japan spent 29% more this summer, with an average of €601, and 13% more this summer in Vietnam, with €380 being spent by the average Irish holidaymaker in the country.
Increased spending in South Africa and New Zealand was more modest, with spending only increasing by 3.7% and 3.4% respectively.
The average Irish holidaymaker spent €508 in South Africa and €625 in New Zealand this summer.
However, Indonesia saw the average Irish holidaymaker spending 7% less this summer, with the average spend of €537.
