HOTREC, which represents the hospitality sector in Europe, has released a report to help develop a Net Zero roadmap for the industry.

The Net Zero Hospitality Roadmap – helping the hospitality sector transition to a greener future, has been produced by specialist desitnation marketing agency TOPOSOPHY Ltd, and highlights the need for an “accelerated response from the hospitality industry to the climate emergency”.

The report provides an analysis of the challenges, opportunities and available support for hotels as they strive to achieve Net Zero at the same time as satisfying the business travel sector’s demands for transparency in the measuring and reporting of emissions for corporate ESG reports. You can read our report on the European Union’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)
here.

The 64-page report looks at progress to date, existing support, including hotel case studies, and insight from experts in the sustainability sector, as well as recommendations for the practical steps to reach Net Zero.

Alexander Vassilikos president of HOTREC said in the report: “The hospitality sector stands united to reach the global climate goals. Investments done today will mean lower energy costs, healthier environment and improved resilience in the future.”

Vassilikos acknowledged the sector is facing a rollercoaster ride with the impact of the ongoing war in Ukraine, inflation, high interest rates and Covid recovery.

He said: “We call on the support of the EU and national governments to help the sector on this journey towards a greener future.”

Practical recommendations include education and awareness, as well as promoting best practices in climate action, encouraging responsible traveller behaviour and increasing awareness on sustainable travel, as well as advocacy and collaboration across the sector.

The report also calls for the creation of an online Climate Action Hub for the hospitality sector.

HOTREC is the umbrella association of hotels, restaurants, bars and cafés and similar establishments in Europe, which brings together 46 national associations in 35 countries.
