ELKO – Behind the walls of a warehouse on Idaho St., a labyrinthine array of shelves take up the majority of the space.

Upon the shelves, rows and rows of small cardboard boxes full of screws, bolts, and the like are pristinely arranged in rows. Towards the front of the building, larger implements such as wrenches and leafblowers hang in inviting displays.

Elko Tool and Fastener specializes in industrial supplies that fill in crucial gaps in a project, such as tools, nuts, bolts, grease and oil.

Company president Bob Collyer explained that he reaches the needs of customers such as ranches and gold mines. He noted that the store carries “products that the mining industry depends on.”

“We cover a good part of northeastern Nevada,” he said.

Collyer explained how he came to Elko. “I was in North Idaho working in the timber industry in the 90s when that market was going down the tube,” he said. When his father-in-law, Don Wilkinson, opened Elko Tool and Fastener, Collyer joined him.

“It’s definitely challenging,” Collyer said of running a business out of Elko. “Elko’s a real different market because it is a little island out on its own, but everybody in the world is trying to get here and get a piece of the business.”

He said that customer service has been the main aspect of his business to grow over the years.

“We’re kind of the go-to people for hard things to find,” Collyer explained. “We have a very extensive inventory. A supply chain that is probably as good as any in the U.S., maybe on the planet. We have a lot of backup with our various vendors and distribution centers.”

Collyer said that as a result of working as a business owner, he has learned the importance of taking care of customers and building partnerships with them.

“You are not there to sell them something, you are there to help them complete their job and complete their goals,” he said.
