Business email compromise, end-user education, forensic archiving and recovery can all be confounding to SMBs that lack the resources for a traditional secure email gateway.

The rise in recent years of cloud-based email offerings such as Microsoft’s Office 365 means that SMBs can now get the same level of email protection without having to rely on a gateway, said Mimecast co-founder, CEO and board member Peter Bauer. As risks evolve in the digital workplace, SMBs struggle to deal with multifaceted problems. “It’s not just your grandfather’s email filtering anymore,” Bauer says (see: Peter Bauer on Charting Mimecast’s New Course Under Permira).

“When organizations ran their own mail servers, they needed to have a gateway to spool mail ahead of it arriving at their local mail server,” Bauer said. “But in the last five years, the vast majority of mailboxes that were distributed have all moved into one centralized infrastructure. That has brought some interesting opportunities to innovate, specifically for smaller and medium-sized companies.”

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Bauer also discusses:

  • Challenges small businesses face when deploying secure email gateways;
  • The security impact of going from gateway-based to gateway-less protection;
  • What the organizations adopting gateway-less email protection look like.

Bauer is the visionary behind Mimecast’s SaaS strategy, which empowers businesses across the globe with comprehensive cyber resilience for email.
