“I’d say we’ve worked on 90-95% of all UK wind farms in some guise or another,” he added.

The company’s largest offshore project to date was Moray East – located in the Moray Firth off the Scottish coast.

CPS was involved from initial pricing and tender support in 2014, through to foundation and wind turbine transportation and installation in 2021 – working with 12 different clients during the project.

It provided port agency and crew change services, in addition to bunkering, vessel charter, procurement, freight forwarding, warehouse management and customs clearance.

During the construction phase, CPS committed 42,000 staff-hours to Moray East, undertaking three scopes of work concurrently and completing 1,300 crew transfers, 989 hotel bookings, 375 port calls and 68 towage movements. The total project spend was £10-11 million from 2019 to 2021.

“It was a big stepping stone, not only for CPS but the ship agency and logistics sector as a whole because nothing had been seen like Moray East at the time,” said Stephen.

The company currently has 22 offices located at key ports across the UK, Ireland and continental Europe. “Out of the 22 offices, all have been involved in offshore energy at one time or another,” said Stephen.

“Our operations team have the flexibility to travel to other CPS offices to support projects, whether that’s down at Hinkley Point in Bristol or Dogger Bank in the North East.”

For each project, CPS has its own full-time staff on the ground, providing a single point of contact available for 24/7 client support. The CPS team has been significantly strengthened by the purchase of Dutch company DHSS, which helps develop wind farms across Europe.

“We will have a team supporting with at least 70 cumulative years’ offshore experience,” said Stephen.

“The team has so much experience and knowledge in offshore renewables, with further backing from other divisions in the group, including in-house specialised brokers and our technology suite.”

Renewable energy has been a big part of CPS’ recent past – and it will play an even bigger role in its future.

“Today, we are working on a number of offshore wind farms including the world’s largest, Dogger Bank. As the group looks to green energy transition to provide the backbone for the company, we are exploring other renewable energy markets, including East Coast USA,” said Stephen, adding that CPS is set up to deliver renewables projects of any shape or size.

“Using our reliable supply chain and in-house expertise, we can turn our hand to almost anything clients require.”

Acquisition shows Clarksons’ renewable credentials

Clarkson Port Services (CPS) recently completed the acquisition of DHSS, a Dutch provider of integrated logistics services to the offshore renewables industry.

Established in 1997, and with a presence at a number of ports in The Netherlands, DHSS acts as a gateway to offshore wind farms, with services spanning the lifecycle of turbine installation, day-to-day operation and ongoing maintenance. It also offers sector-specialist coordination of port logistics, warehousing and helicopter movements from strategically located marshalling ports.

Over the past decade, the company has grown substantially by extending its portfolio of clients internationally. Together, CPS and DHSS have formed a 200-strong team, with DHSS continuing to operate from its Netherlands headquarters and integrating into the CPS business.

“We are delighted to share this positive news with the market,” said David Rumsey, managing director of Clarkson Port Services.

“The acquisition very much continues our strategy of growth through investing in complementary activities and locations that will diversify and deepen our offering to existing and future clients.

“We welcome the DHSS team to Clarksons and look forward to the opportunities that it brings the combined business.”

Wim Schouwenaar, founder of DHSS, said: “The acquisition will provide us with the operational efficiencies necessary to achieve our vision and to support the offshore renewables industry on a global scale.

“Within Clarksons we can accelerate and improve our overall performance and increase the value of the services offered to our customers. Together, we are set to capitalise on the expansion of renewable energy and be part of a wider growth engine.”
