The establishment of an office in Ondo state will boost productivity of the private and public sectors in the state, the Director-General of the National Productivity Centre (NPC), Dr Nasir Raji-Mustapha, has said.
Speaking when he paid a scheduled visit to the Acting Governor of the Ondo state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in Akure, the NPC boss explained that the NPC state office in Edo state oversees Ondo state, which limits the capacity of the Centre to execute its programmes effectively in the state.
Raji-Mustapha said: “In our structural makeup, Ondo State is covered by the Edo state office but we are confident that can change if steps are taken to reverse the situation. We will be able to deliver our programmes to the people of Ondo state if the State, through your good office, can secure an office for the National Productivity Centre to deploy men and material to engage members of the society on productivity.”
The NPC chief also urged the state government to organize the public sector workers for ‘Productivity improvement and effective service delivery training’ across the state for improved performance and enhanced service delivery.
He said the presence of a state office will enable the Centre to organise productivity activities in the state that will ensure the installation of the Productivity and Quality Improvement Programme (P&QIP) in the state at very little or no cost to the state or enterprise.
He expressed hope that the Centre’s programmes will positively influence the economic growth and development of the state when an office is fully functional in the state.
Raji-Mustapha argued that every conversation at various levels and quarters in Nigeria today on the state of the economy and development points to the actual productivity deficit in the nation as a people.
He explained: “It is with this concern that the National Productivity Centre is leaving no stone unturned in making frank efforts at engaging, the government, business owners, employers of labour, and labour in productivity initiatives and activities that can change the narratives for better. The National Productivity Centre is a Federal Government Parastatal established by ACT (CAP) 70 of the laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 charged with the mandate to accelerate socio-economic growth and development of Nigeria through productivity improvement activities in all sectors of Nigeria’s economy.
“At the centre, we stimulate and promote productivity consciousness through our Productivity Awareness Campaign (PAC) programmes and activities, monitor productivity trends through productivity measurement and index, source and distill productivity information through productivity studies and surveys, build individual and institutional capacities through productivity training, workshops and seminars, and improve the operational efficiency of organisations through productivity, quality improvement programmes and consultancy services.”
He hinted that since April 7, 1987 when the Centre was created, it has evolved various programmes and provided specific services in fulfilling its mandates and meeting government objectives of establishment as a National Productivity Organisation.
He stated that the Centre has 18 state offices spread across the six geo-political zones of the nation with Plateau state office as the newest state office of the Centre.
He added that the centre promotes productivity awareness aimed at creating awareness through its productivity awareness campaign activities for MDAs, companies, schools, and the general society to make Nigerians conscious of productivity.
He noted that the Centre also provides in-depth knowledge on productivity through the organised courses and training.
“In yielding the benefits of productivity better, we carry out productivity improvement activities by deploying our tools and techniques to turn around the fortunes of organizations and institutions either private or public through the productivity and Quality Improvement Programme (P&QIP) that has six technical phases,” he said.
In his remarks, the Acting lauded the Centre’s giant strides in productivity promotion in the bid to boost the economic growth of the country.
He said: “I want to thank the Centre for all it is doing to boost the productivity level of the economy. Without productivity, the economy cannot perform optimally. The state is ready to benefit from the programmes of the Centre and we are ready as a government to support the Centre perform its functions in our state. Action will be taken on your requests on time because we will like to see the office take off very soon.”
