Danish royal Count Nikolai of Monpezat, nephew of Tasmanian-born Princess Mary, has started a new chapter in Australia after being stripped of his Prince title.
Princess Mary has toured around Sydney on a bicycle before leading discussions on Australia’s transition to renewable energy on Friday.
The Princess of Denmark was overheard saying: “No one looks good in a helmet, but safety first” before she cycled from Hyde Park to Circular Quay.
The Tasmanian-born Princess has described Sydney as a “sustainable city” as she is set to head a delegation discussing Australia’s green transition following her recent visit to Vanuatu.
Nikolai, 23, will complete a semester at the University of Technology in Sydney before returning to Europe in November.
Over the weekend, the young royal, who is considered one of Europe’s most eligible bachelors, was spotting getting coffee with a friend in Sydney.
Nikolai is the eldest grandchild of Denmark’s ruling Queen Margrethe and currently sits seventh in line to the Danish throne behind his uncle Prince Frederik, his four cousins and his father Prince Joachim.
He and his younger brother Count Felix, 21, are the children of Joachim and his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.
Nikolai also has two younger half-siblings, Count Henrik and Countess Athena, from Joachim’s second marriage to his present wife, Princess Marie of Denmark.
Last year, the Danish royals were embroiled in an epic family feud after Queen Margrethe opted to strip her younger son’s children of their royal titles to slim down and future proof the monarchy.
The decision saw Nikolai cease to be Prince Nikolai of Denmark and become known as Count Nikolai of Monpezat.
The rift saw Frederik and Mary, who will one day ascend the throne as King and Queen of Denmark, side with Margrethe.
Meanwhile, Joachim publicly slammed his mother in interviews with Danish newspapers, while Marie made thinly veiled jabs to a French magazine.
Months after the feud went global, the families appeared to heal the rift, and Joachim and Marie announced plans to leave Europe and start new lives in the United States.
At 23, Nikolai appears to be forging his own path and has already enjoyed a successful modelling career on the catwalk for brands like Dior and Burberry, in addition to university studies in business administration.
