Popular Carlisle takeaway launches special menu to mark 10-year anniversary

Food@Broadway was born in 2013 when owners Fiona Barwick and Andrea Sowerby decided to turn their old office workspace into a takeaway that offers ‘something different’ to the people of Carlisle.

A decade later and the Kingstown Broadway takeaway’s attitude to using homemade ingredients remains one of the main reasons behind its success.

Fiona Barwick told the News & Star: “Everything is homemade. We don’t buy sandwich fillings we cook everything ourselves.

“We boil every egg, we don’t just open a tub.

“We make homemade soups. We source things using local butchers and local egg and cheese suppliers. I just think it works. Once you set the bar high, you’ve got to remain there.

Throughout the week, Food@Broadway will be offering special 10-themed menu items, such as a 10oz burger, 10-inch Cumberland hot dog, and 10 chicken wings, which are sure to prove popular with customers.

Like many other businesses across the UK, the cost of living crisis has made things difficult for Food@Broadway in recent times, but hard work and the support of its customers means that it is still going strong a decade after opening.

Fiona said: “I’m pretty proud that we’re still here. It’s hard. Our electric bill is £1,400 a month, so you’ve got to be pickier when you’re coming in for outside catering.

“But we still get a lot of footfall Monday to Friday, so we can’t complain. It’s hard graft but the nice customers make it worth it.

“Some are coming in twice a day. People are looking for a bit of cheering up. A bit of cake or a treat. I think people want a bit more spice and are looking for different things, which is good because it keeps you on your toes.

“It’s mostly the men who can’t resist the cake!”

A further celebration is expected next month, as the takeaway will close for the final two weeks of August as staff head out on annual leave.
