Anneliese Dodds, the chair of the Labour Party, has told Sky News that “really serious action” needs to be taken to protect victims of domestic violence.
She was asked about Justice Secretary Dominic Raab’s new plans to pursue much tougher sentences for domestic killers.
Ms Dodds said: “Labour will welcome any measure that will improve the safety of women and girls, but I have to say we’ve seen really concerning developments over recent years here.
“If you look since 2015, we’ve seen prosecutions for domestic violence halve, while reports of domestic violence have more than doubled.
“We need really serious action to be taken here, that’s not just around sentencing, because actually for very many domestic violence victims, they simply are not getting to that stage of anywhere near prosecution.”
She pressed that domestic abuse specialists should be present in every 999 control room.
“We also need to see more specialist courts, because we have such a huge backlog,” Ms Dodds said.
“For many women, they’re not getting to this stage of sentencing. They’re continuing to have to live in fear.
“I’m afraid this is getting worse in a Conservative government.”
