‘Small queue’ for UK nationals to leave Sudan – but evacuation is ‘going smoothly’

Andrew Mitchell, the minister for Africa, told Sophy Ridge of the evacuation of Sudan: “So far, so good.”

He said the process is going “very smoothly”, with 300 UK nationals having now left the country on four flights.

The first group of 130 Britons arrived back in the UK via Cyprus this afternoon.

Mr Mitchell said: “The message to the British nationals who want to leave is come to the airport. There’s no great backlog, no great congestion, and we’re taking people out in a steady manner.

“In terms of getting to the airport, we adopted the exact same route as the Germans did. The Germans told people they had to get themselves to the airport, and then they would be taken out.”

Pressed on his judgement that the process has gone “smoothly”, Mr Mitchell said there is a “small queue” – but hiccups are generally expected.

“Of course there are problems, and in these sort of situations the news is not always accurate,” he said.

“We are absolutely in the hands of the ceasefire. This is the second day of a three-day ceasefire.”

Mr Mitchell added: “As far as the British citizens are concerned, we are getting them out.”
