JACKSON COUNTY, MI – The Pleasant Lake Pub has reopened and Taco Bell is set to open in Brooklyn.

You’ll find huge burgers on the menu at the recently reopened Pleasant Lake Pub

Fire caused the Pleasant Lake Pub to close in 2016, and it looked like it may not reopen.

But Brian Kemppainen purchased the restaurant two years ago and has reopened the pub in Henrietta Township, north of Jackson, with a great menu, warm atmosphere and drinks.

Kemppainen lives with his family in South Lyon, but they’ve owned a cottage on Pleasant Lake for more than five years. After previously working in the restaurant industry in his youth, he decided he wanted to open a place of his own.

Several Jackson County-area businesses have opened in 2023, ranging from long-awaited retail stores to family-owned eateries.

Here’s a look at some of the businesses that opened this year. Some of these include the Old Irish Mill in Brooklyn, Murphy’s Bistro in downtown Jackson, Ross Dress for Less in the Jackson Crossing and Blessed In inside of the Westwood Mall.

In 2023, several Jackson County-area businesses closed their doors to the community. These ranged between abrupt closures to owners retiring.

Here are some businesses that closed this year. Some of these include Slice n Dice Board Game Pizzeria outside of Jackson, Save-A-Lot in Jackson, Swiss Treat and Bras That Fit in Michigan Center.

Taco Bell plans to open soon in Brooklyn

Residents can soon dine at Taco Bell in Brooklyn.

Construction at the new Taco Bell location at 413 S. Main St., right next door to the Big Boy restaurant, has nearly come to an end, and officials anticipate opening the week of Jan. 15.

The store originally hoped to open in December but the timeline was pushed out due to weather and equipment delays, officials wrote in an email.

Jackson YMCA plans for groundbreaking of new facility with smaller addition

As the Jackson YMCA gears up for a groundbreaking on a new addition and complete renovation of the facility next month, officials have again reduced the size of the addition to deal with increasing construction costs.

The Jackson YMCA, 127 W. Wesley St., has been working on a $25 million capital campaign since 2017 to create a reimagined use of its current facility. YMCA officials are expecting to begin construction on the new facility Monday, Jan. 8.

“Everybody’s just beyond excited,” Tello said. “Early on, we did a community needs assessment and we’re confident that this facility really will meet the need, not only of downtown Jackson and the county, but of our neighborhood right here.”
