House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced he would authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Biden [“McCarthy tells panels to open Biden inquiry,” front page, Sept. 13]. This is a blatant stunt with seemingly no substance, whose purpose is simply the exercise of raw political power.

In a country where the political divide is close to 50-50, a swing of just one or two percentage points could change the outcome of a national election. If the inquiry evolves into a full-blown impeachment, as it surely will, it could raise enough doubts about the ethics, honesty and integrity of Mr. Biden to reduce his electability. How it will all unfold remains to be seen. Buckle up!
