Is the City of New Bedford unfriendly towards businesses? Is the process one that is bogged down with bureaucracy, red tape, inspections, permits, licenses, an taxes to the point it makes it harder and harder to do business in the city?
“When’s the last time some of you took notice of all the closed businesses and empty buildings in New Bedford, especially in the north end?
Just on my short drive to work I can count a handful for sale, lease, or closed.
The Boat Restaurant, Bob Nichols Garage, the empty lot where the garage on the corner of Ashley Blvd. and Wood Street once stood, New York Buffet restaurant, the Potting Bench moved to Fairhaven because of higher taxes in New Bedford, even Dunkin on Tarkiln Hill and Ashley Blvd.
How bad does it have to be to close one of the most popular fast-food chains in the Northeast? Then there’s Kings Hwy Plaza. It used to be filled with stores like Ames, Ashmont, restaurants. Now there’s an empty department store building, empty grocery store, and 2 empty restaurants. I won’t even get into the downtown NNew Bedford businesses that have closed or moved.
Yet Fairhaven’s plaza is getting better with Tractor Supply and popular chain restaurants. Let’s face it, taxes in this city are driving businesses out.”
