Ohio fraud alert: Scammers impersonating funeral homes to steal financial information

Scammers have begun taking advantage of those who are burying loved ones as they impersonate cemeteries and funeral homes.

The Ohio Department of Commerce issued a consumer alert Thursday regarding instances of scammers retrieving contact information of the decedent’s families from obituaries, where they then pretend to be the funeral home or cemetery to collect finance information, according to a release from the Ohio Department of Commerce.

Individuals who receive suspicious calls are encouraged to call the cemetery or funeral home directly to ensure that the call is legitimate, before releasing any private information, according to the release.

The Division of Securities is aware of at least one cemetery in which this has occurred to its customers thus far, according to the website.

“We want Ohio cemeteries and funeral homes to be aware of this potential scam and let the families they serve know your process,” Daphne Hawk, Superintendent of the Division of Real Estate and Professional Licensing, said in a statement within the release. “We have resources on how to handle such scams and what to do if you understandably fall for one, too.”
