Northwell Health has opened a multispecialty physician practice in New Jersey, with the healthcare system’s first expansion into the Garden State.

The new practice, Northwell Health Physician Partners (NHPP), located at 725 River Road in Edgewater, offers primary care, specialty services and a focus on the full array of liver diseases.

Specialists in hepatology and liver transplant are available through the Northwell Transplant Institute in Manhasset. The office expands access to care for a growing number of New Jersey patients who are treated at Northwell’s facilities, particularly those patients who require pre- and post-transplant services.

“Many New Jersey residents who commute into New York City already get some form of care from Northwell Health clinicians,” Dr. Mark Talamini, senior vice president and executive director of NHPP, said in a statement. “We believe that care begins close to home and we see northern New Jersey as a natural extension of the coordination of care we already offer throughout the New York Metro market,”

Northwell’s entry into New Jersey, and the practice’s transplant services, comes at a time when chronic liver disease is the ninth leading cause of death.  The diseases claimed the lives of more than 56,000 adults in 2021, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For New Jersey patients, the new practice cuts down on travel time when seeking transplant or primary care.

Having treated millions of New Yorkers, the health system is “proud to be able to offer these exceptional health options to Bergen County residents,” Beiner, a senior vice president and executive director at Northwell, said in a statement. “Our Edgewater location is a standalone option for health care, but also serves as a gateway to some of the most complex medical experts in the world.”

Manhasset-based North Shore University Hospital recently completed its 150th liver transplant since the program first began in 2019. About 5% of all patients at North Shore travel more than 100 miles to seek care from the CMS 5-Star hospital, according to the health system.

“We’re excited to bring transplant services to northern New Jersey,” Dr.  Nabil Dagher, vice president and director of the Northwell Transplant Institute, said in a statement. “Northwell is filling an urgent need for more transplant services in the region and the pandemic has only exacerbated the demand for expert liver disease care.”
