NOFD Battles Three-Alarm Fire in the French Quarter
On Thursday, November 30, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was dispatched to the 500 block of Dauphine St., in the heart of the French Quarter, following the report of a working fire. The first NOFD unit arrived on the scene at 6:33 p.m., finding a wood-framed, brick façade structure at 533 Dauphine St. already heavily involved with fire emanating through the roof. This prompted the request for a second alarm immediately. Upon entering the structure, NOFD Fire Operations personnel noticed that the building was pretty much just an open space with exposed beams and a wooden roof that was already showing signs of collapse. The close proximity of exposed occupied dwellings on three sides of the fire building was cause for a third alarm to be requested at 6:42 p.m.
During fire suppression activities, fire department personnel were informed that the fire building was a structure used mostly for utility purposes, parking, workshop, and storage, for the Olivier Hotel just across the street at the corner of Dauphine and Toulouse Streets. After being informed that no one was inside the building and all residents of the neighboring properties had escaped safely, firefighters were able to focus all attention on fire suppression activities, bringing this incident under control at 7:33 p.m. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The New Orleans Police Department and Entergy both assisted in the mitigation of this incident, as well as New Orleans Emergency Medical Services being on standby to assist if needed.
