Newsday has named Rochell Bishop Sleets of the Chicago Tribune to be its next managing editor beginning Feb. 27, Newsday Editor Don Hudson announced recently.
Sleets will report to Hudson, who became Newsday’s top editor on Dec. 1 after serving as managing editor.
She currently serves as one of two news directors – becoming the first Black person to be appointed the position in 2020.
A 16-year veteran of the Tribune, she oversees coverage of business news, education, arts and entertainment and the environment. While working full-time, she became a volunteer teacher at her son’s grade school in the morning and began tutoring other students with their homework, SAT and ACT preparations.
Prior to her time in Chicago, she worked at the St. Paul Pioneer Press in Minnesota and The Kansas City Star in editing and art direction jobs.
Sleets grew up in New Jersey. She will live on Long Island with her husband, Gentry, an engineer and former journalist. They are parents to four adult children.
