GIRLS SOFTBALL – Both COACH AND TEAM ARE CHAMPS
Congratulations to Julie Vasquez who was named coach of the year! — Patriot League Coach of the Year for Softball. She has made such a positive impact on our community and she absolutely does it all! Congratulations Julie! ==== (in photo, she is holding the award). Our school athletic director, Colleen Ford, is on the right ==== Ceci Chiaravalle was named First Team All State the second year in a row; and Ava Vasquez (Julie’s daughter) was named Honorable Mention for All State as a freshman! ==== Lyons came in 5th at State in 3A. *NOTE* Even though they should play 2A based on school and program size, they play 3A because the state has no 2A softball.

VOLLEYBALL WORLD GAMES – LOCALS PARTICIPATE
Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour, November 2 to 5, 2023, in Haikou, China.
It is not every day that a local youth represents the USA on an international stage (although far more often in Lyons than you would think for our size:) Gage Basey and sports partner Thomas Hurst (from Plano TX) played in the U21 Beach World Championships!
SCHEDULE of World Games
Gage and Thomas were in pool F and played on November 7th versus Uruguay on Court 4. === Then on Wednesday and Thursday they played against Denmark, who was 5th at U19 Beach World Championships on Court 4. Thursday was against a Chilean team on Court 1.
Update November 12th: Lyons local Gage Basey and Thomas Hurst from Plano Texas finished tied for 9th place in the U21 World Beach Volleyball Championships in Roi Et, Thailand. They beat teams from Paraguay, Denmark and Lebanon, but lost to teams from Chili and Italy in the 43 team tourney. What an incredible opportunity to represent the USA on a world stage!
LYONS MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM – QUARTER-FINALS
November 4, beat Akron
November 11, beat Dove Creek, semi-finals
November 18, play Mancos, quarter-finals
November 25, may play in Pueblo, finals
“If you don’t have kids at Lyons Middle/High School or if you’re new to Lyons you may not know about the multi-generational history of Lyons and Akron in the 1-A football world,” said Britton Fell, retired school Resource Officer, and team coach for two years, now retired (to Florida). “There’s been state championships on the line more than once. Several years ago coach John Nichols described the old school single wing offense of Akron as a machine. The mathematics of RPI has matched us up again for the first round of the state playoffs. The RPI for our 9-0 Lyons gives us the home field advantage. Another chapter of this history will be written this Saturday afternoon. I’ll be streaming it at my tiki bar in the tropics. The Lyons Nation is far and wide! GO LYONS, BEAT AKRON!”
The Lyons school sports point person Stacey Paznokas said,… to be clear… “Lyons used to be 1-A 11 man but changed to 8 man about 4 years ago. Colorado only designates 6-man, 8-man, and 11-man by 1-6a. Lyons is 8 man. We beat Akron on November 4, and moved on to the semifinals against Dove Creek on Saturday November 11. We won that game, too, so our football team moved on to the quarterfinals in Mancos against them next Saturday, November 18. It’s essentially down to 4 teams. If we win then Lyons plays for the state championship in Pueblo on Saturday November 25. Details about the 8-man football state championship can be found on the CHSSA website.” — Mark your Calendars!
