•Sonoma-based Donum Estate has acquired Savoy Vineyard in Anderson Valley for an undisclosed sum. Planted in 1991 by Richard Savoy, the 52-acre Savoy property joins the Donum portfolio of Carneros, Russian River Valley, Bodega, and existing Anderson Valley vines, and will allow Donum to immediately expand its wine portfolio with the 2023 vintage. The acquisition marks Donum’s first estate vineyard outside of Sonoma County, and will further its mission of producing world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, according to the company.
•California’s DK Wine Group is releasing a new entry, Admire by Dan Kosta Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. Billed as an everyday wine from the Kosta Browne cofounder, Admire is 100% Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast and retails at $32 a bottle. DK Wine Group’s other offerings include Convene by Dan Kosta and DK Grail.
•Sotheby’s auction house has appointed Nick Pegna as global head of wine & spirits, effective in August. Based in London, Pegna spent a 23-year tenure at Berry Bros. & Rudd, where he operated the global sales fine wine teams, set up and ran businesses in Hong Kong and Singapore, and from 2016 on led their Wine & Spirits business across Asia. Most recently, he acted as managing director of his own fine wine private client brokerage and advisory firm. In his new role, Pegna will be responsible for accelerating Sotheby’s wine & spirits growth globally. Additionally, Sotheby’s appointed Jonny Fowle as global head of spirits.
•Isle of Skye blended Scotch whisky has launched its full portfolio in the U.S. The range, from Ian Macleod Distillers, now covers whiskies from eight to 30 years old with all available in 700-ml. bottles. Isle of Skye’s 8-year-old retails for $21, 12-year-old for $28, 18-year-old for $65, 21-year-old for $115, 25-year-old for $207, and 30-year-old for $322. The whiskies are now available in select retailers across the U.S.
•Scheid Family Wines has reported sales of $69 million for its fiscal year through February, up 6% over the previous year. Growth was led by a 15% jump in sales of cased goods, which offset an 18% decline in bulk wine and grape sales, attributed to the smaller 2022 harvest. “This sales momentum is being driven by our low-alcohol brand, Sunny with a Chance of Flowers, as well as increased sales in some of our private and exclusive brands,” said president and CEO Scott Scheid. “We are focused on increasing margins through taking price increases and reducing costs, honing our sales focus on our key brands, (and) pursuing new business through our innovative brand portfolio.” The Scheid portfolio also includes Scheid Vineyards and Grandeur, among others.
•Los Angeles-based Avaline, the wine brand co-founded by Cameron Diaz and Katherine Power, is launching a Sauvignon Blanc. Joining Avaline’s White Blend as the second white wine in the portfolio, the Sauvignon Blanc is a blend sourced from Bordeaux. As is standard for the brand, it’s made with 100% organic grapes and zero grams of sugar per glass. It’s available for purchase now for $26 a bottle. Avaline grew 45% to 80,000 cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.
