Proton has unveiled its newest addition to its lineup for South Africa, the Porton X90 Hybrid SUV – with a starting price of R559,900.

This price tag makes the X90 the cheapest 7-seater SUV with a hybrid engine. The flagship SUV debuted at the Kyalami Festival of Motoring on Thursday (24 August) ahead of sales commencing at the end of August.

The hybrid Proton X90 combines advanced technology co-developed by Geely and Volvo, and CEO of CMH Group, Jebb McIntosh, said, “We are excited to be introducing the Proton X90 to the South African market.

“The Proton X90’s arrival marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to delivering unparalleled driving experiences. This is what affordable luxury is all about,” he added.

The X90 will come with four variants – Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship.

The Standard model features 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights and daytime running lights, LED fog lamps, a leather multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, keyless entry and start, fabric seats, automatic dual-zone climate control, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with voice commands, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and six speakers, reported TopAuto.

It also comes with safety fittings, including six airbags, traction control, hill assist, ABS, two front parking sensors, and four rear parking sensors – including nine charging points, autonomous parking, and road sign recognition.

The Executive will add automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a powered tailgate, leatherette upholstery, a wireless charger, an LCD driver display, a six-way electronic driver’s seat, and a 360-degree camera.

The Flagship offers all the above-mentioned with an added panoramic sunroof.

Performance

The X90 is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that works alongside a 48-volt electric motor system.

Proton has not yet released the fuel consumption figure but disclosed that the seven-seater produces a total of 130kW and 255Nm – paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with selectable driving modes for Sport, Eco, and Comfort.
