CHARLOTTE – Jeff Sural, a top executive at the NCInnovation program launched with $500 million of state backing over the next two years, left the organization last week. He had been senior vice president and chief strategy officer.
Officials called the departure a natural evolution as the group shifts from a concept into its startup phase. This week the group named four regional directors to lead its operations at four anchor universities, UNC Charlotte, Western Carolina University, East Carolina University and N.C. A&T State University. They will report to Michelle Bolas, who is now executive vice president and chief innovation officer.

Requests for comment from Sural were not immediately returned.
He is an expert in the broadband industry, having worked for more than 20 years in policy and leadership posts. His job at NC Innovation included translating the group’s strategy into goals, tasks and metrics.
Before joining NCInnovation, Sural helped lead the Biden Administration’s $10 billion broadband grant initiative. He previously was director of the state’s Broadband Infrastructure Office, during the terms of governors Pat McCrory and Roy Cooper.
