The event, hosted by the NATO PA in collaboration with the Swedish Riksdag, covered a number of themes and focussed on Sweden’s contribution to NATO and support for NATO partners at risk.
To learn more about Sweden’s contribution to NATO, parliamentarians from across the alliance heard from several high profile speakers, including the Minister for Defence, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Minister for European Union Affairs, a former Prime Minister, and the Deputy Speaker of the Swedish Riksdag. These briefings were supplemented by a visit to the Livgardet (Life Guards Regiment), the Swedish Armed Forces’ largest unit.
The seminar also included panels focussing on the alliance’s partners, with discussions on Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The United Kingdom Ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden, Ambassador Judith Gough CMG, met with the UK Delegation and addressed the Assembly during a panel on the path forward for the integration of NATO partners at risk.
Following the visit, the Baroness Kingsmill CBE said:
“Our visit to Sweden has enhanced our awareness of the important contribution that they will make to the alliance, once they have taken up their rightful place as the 32nd NATO ally. In Stockholm, we met with members of parliaments from NATO member and partner countries, government officials, representatives from NATO, as well as experts from universities, think tanks and NGOs. We also visited the Life Guards Regiment, the Swedish Armed Forces’ largest unit.
“The panels on NATO’s partners, notably those on Ukraine, but also on Georgia, Moldova, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, will inform the work of the United Kingdom Delegation within the UK Parliament and at future NATO Parliamentary Assembly events.”
