MotoGP™’s new CCO talks Asian tour and US growth

Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and more all show a special kind of love and support for MotoGP™, but you can never quite truly comprehend it without being sat in the stands for the first time – as new CCO at MotoGP™, Dan Rossomondo, recently discovered.

The former NBA exec sat down with the Sports Business Journal to talk about the Grand Prix paddock’s current tour of Asia and potential growth within his native US.

“What an unbelievable privilege it is to take a sport that brings so much joy to people, and seeing their faces in Lombok [Indonesia] or even Emilia-Romagna [in Italy], which is the heart of MotoGP,” Rossomondo said. “It’s a privilege to race there and bring an entertainment product that brings such joy to people. It’s what gets me running to my desk every morning because I think what we do is exceptional”.

“2023 has been an outstanding year for the sport at the circuit and further afield as well, with global TV audiences up more than 20% from 2022 and event attendance up not only from 2022 but also from 2019, the year before the pandemic. More than 1.6 million people — an all-time high — had passed through the circuit gates after 12 rounds”.

Plus, Rossomondo hinted at potential growth throughout the US. The hugely successful Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas is currently our only Stateside stop, but the New Yorker is exploring potential options to add another Grand Prix in the near future. Rossomondo is in talks with new venues in the U.S., such as the new Flatrock Motorsports Park in Tennessee, about possibly bringing a second race to the U.S. In terms of key initiatives, near the top is figuring out MotoGP’s media rights for 2024 in the U.S. The incumbent is NBC Sports, but MotoGP is talking to other media companies as well.
