In October 2023, Canada witnessed a significant uptick in apparel imports, registering a value of US $ 1.40 billion, a notable increase from the previous month’s US $ 979 million, representing a substantial 43 per cent growth.

Official statistics reveal that this surge followed a dip in September, maintaining a fluctuating trend throughout the year. To provide context, Canada’s recent import figures include US $ 1.40 billion (October ’23), US $ 979 million (September ’23), US $ 1.14 billion (August ’23), and US $ 970 million (July ’23).

The alternating pattern of growth and decline in imports underscores the fluctuating demand, a primary driver of this trend.

Notably, there has been an overall cumulative decrease in exports to Canada from key countries such as India, China, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

From January to October ’23, India experienced a 12 per cent decline in apparel exports to Canada, totaling US $ 319.60 million. Bangladesh, on the other hand, recorded US $ 1.24 billion during the same period, marking a significant 15.19 per cent year-on-year decrease.
