Police are probing a car cannibal who was caught on CCTV removing a bonnet of a car and casually walking off with his haul in Birmingham. The suspected thief struck under the cover of darkness on a main road which has devastated a family-of-five in the cost of living crisis.

Footage initially shows a man walking past a family’s VW Golf parked on the street along Stechford Lane in Hodge Hill. The car’s driver’s window is smashed before the bonnet is opened. The cannibal suspect is seen strolling off with the car part at 1.16am on March 10.

The car belongs to a family which is the only vehicle in their household. Loved ones said the insurance premium would undoubtedly rise due to this incident – piling more pressure onto the family during the rise in cost of living.

A brother of the victim’s family, who asked not to be named, told BirminghamLive: “The thief smashed the driver’s window and took the bonnet of the car. It’s strange as in recent days we have seen others acting suspicious around the vehicle.

“The frustration this has caused is unreal as this is the only vehicle in the household and is used daily for the family. Unfortunately, given the rise in insurance premiums in the inner city postcodes having to claim for situations like this clearly does not help especially with the rise in cost of living.”

Police are investigating the incident. No arrests have yet been made although inquiries are ongoing.
