Minister of State for Electronics & Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, addressed the pressing issue of Deep Fakes in a comprehensive meeting involving key players in the internet industry. Highlighting the government’s longstanding concerns dating back to October 2022 regarding misinformation and Deep Fakes, Chandrasekhar emphasized the need for stringent measures to counter this threat. He stressed that while the current IT rules under the 23-year-old IT Act cover compliance requirements, future regulations and laws are imperative. In the meeting, internet intermediaries acknowledged the adequacy of the existing regulations but agreed to further align their terms of use with the government’s directives. Chandrasekhar announced plans for an advisory and a directive to ensure all platforms adhere to the prohibited areas outlined by Indian Internet regulations. The platforms committed to harmonizing their terms of use within seven days to guarantee a safe and reliable environment for all users across various platforms.
