Prosecutors are seeking to land a financial blow against alleged illegal mining kingpin Bethuel Ngobeni ahead of his criminal trial by seizing R4.5 million from two of his bank accounts. 

The 38-year-old from Carletonville, Gauteng, was one of six high-ranking members of an alleged criminal syndicate charged in October last year with multiple counts of dealing in illegal gold and money laundering.  

The arrests formed part of an undercover sting operation, four years in the making, called Project Gillet.
