Middlesbrough transfer news LIVE as Boro weigh up deadline day business

[ad_1]

Hello and welcome to our live blog coverage of Middlesbrough’s transfer deadline day. It’s already been a busy window for Michael Carrick and Boro, with 11 new signings arriving on Teesside this summer.

And we’re now until the final hours of the window, with business closing at 11pm tonight until the January transfer window. Boro have strengthened in key areas with the likes of Emmanuel Latte Lath, Seny Dieng, Sammy Silvera and now Sam Greenwood joining the club.

And there has been one deadline day deal on Teesside so far, with Alex Bangura joining from SC Cambuur. However, there could be more late action before tonight’s deadline, with the chance that players could leave.

It’s not been the ideal start to the season, but Carrick remains confident his squad will continue to improve as the weeks go by. We’ll have all the latest Middlesbrough transfer news, plus updates from across the Championship on deadline day, as we head to tonight’s 11pm deadline.

Unofficial confirmation of Payero’s Boro exit

We await the official confirmation. But the below screenshot is taken from the official Serie A website and shows their acknowledgement of the permanent transfer of Payero from Middlesbrough to Udinese.

Udinese signing

Well it’s still not Payero, but they’re at least proving the point they can announce things beyond the 7 pm deadline

Martin Payero latest

The deadline in Italy has technically now passed, but we are still expecting the Martin Payero sale to go through. This from the Udinese Blog in the last hour:

Last minute but expected signing of Middlesbrough midfielder Martin Payero. The player’s contract has been deposited with the League. This is a permanent purchase.

Suggestion that Bangura won’t play tomorrow

In his club interview, he speaks about looking forward to playing at the Riverside in front of all the fans and does reference the QPR game tomorrow.

But he goes on to say that he has met some of his new team-mates today and is looking forward to beginning training with them on Monday. It seems unlikely, in that case, that Carrick would include him tomorrow.

One in at Udinese

A player who had tentative links to Boro as well in Keinan Davis. Hopefully Martin Payero confirmation is coming soon.

What next on deadline day?

We still expect confirmation that Martin Payero will leave for Udinese before tonight’s deadline.

Interestingly, their deadline is 7 pm English time, so just over an hour remaining for them to complete that deal. As things stand, we’re not expecting any issues there.

Beyond that, five hours remaining for any more potential incoming or outgoing business concerning English clubs, but right now we’re not hearing anything to suggest there will be any.

Bangura’s classy goodbye to Cambuur

The Boro new boy writes on Instagram:

Cambuur-supporters, After five unforgettable seasons, it’s time to say goodbye and for me to move on to the next step in my career.

Firstly, I want to thank you so much for the support I have always felt and heard in the stadium and beyond. The growth I have gone through – both as a person and as a player – would not have been possible without you and the opportunities I have gotten here at this fantastic folk club.

I will always be grateful to the club for that. It was an honor to wear the yellow-blue and I hope to see you all again soon (in the Eredivisie)! Come on Cambuur!

Get to know Bangura

Here’s our backgrounder on Boro’s 12th summer signing

Carrick on Bangura

The Boro head coach said:

“He’s a really exciting signing. He’s a left-back and he’s captained his team.

“He’s a good character with a great personality and he won’t have any problem fitting into the group.”

Bangura details

No surprise it’s an undisclosed fee that is reported in the Netherlands to be a record fee for SC Cambuur.

The 24-year-old has signed a four-year contract at the Riverside.

DONE DEAL: Alex Bangura

Alex Bangura is a Middlesrough player. Four-year contract.

Alex Bangura is a Boro player!

That’s some announcement video!

Isaac Hayden

Linked to Boro last week as Newcastle look to offload. As it happened, Boro had no interest in signing the midfielder having been offered him. They were already working on the Lewis O’Brien deal.

It looked instead like Hayden was heading for Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day, but now reports are suggesting that Belgium club Standard Liege have hijacked that one. Transfer deadline day, eh…

Oh and as far as Boro are concerned, it’s still just a waiting game… a slow, slowwwww, waiting game. Still expecting Bangura to sign and Payero to leave. Just over seven hours left but no word on any other potential deals right now.

Plymouth boss on Coburn

Steven Schumacher told our sister site Plymouth Live:

“Josh is a good player. I had the opportunity to sign Josh last year and it didn’t work out, he was injured at the time.

“So I watched him obviously last season. He was brilliant for Bristol Rovers. I think he’s a mobile number nine and is a good player.

“I went back for him this year and said I would wait. I couldn’t wait last year because he was injured, but I said I would wait for him this year. We had a deal in place with Middlesbrough.

“I was in contact with Michael this week and he said to me ‘Look, our plans have changed and we are going to keep him in’. When you are the club trying to get a loan player that’s just how it is.

“I wouldn’t say in hindsight would I wish I had done something different because I think he would have complemented our team.

“But now he’s not coming then it’s no big drama. We will move onto the next target, which we have already got that plan in place and hopefully we can get over the line today.”

Transfer state of play

It’s very much just as you were really as we go past 2 pm and therefore less than nine hours to go in the transfer window.

We’re just awaiting confirmation on both the deal fo Alex Bangura and Martin Payero to leave.

Beyond that, there are things like McNair leaving that could still happen, but are yet to have any other wheels in motion as things stand.

Fin Cartwright

The latest Boro player to receive an international call-up. He’s been named in the England U17 squad for games in Spain against the host nation, Portugal and Morocco.

Carrick clarifies Boro’s loan stance

Having previously said that Boro had moved away from loan reliance, they yesterday signed Lewis O’Brien and Sam Greenwood. Explaining that, Carrick said:

“It’s not a change in mind at all. What I meant is that we were quite heavily weighed towards loans last season, and that is something we were conscious off. But we have given ourselves better foundations now to move forward.

“So by no means are we against loans and we are delighted to have the boys in. It’s just getting the right balance really, to get us through the next few months, the rest of the season, but then also keeping an eye on beyond that as well. We always want to build and evolve as a group. “

Congratulations to Law Mccabe

The 17-year-old Boro midfielder has been included in the England under-18 squad for the Maurice Revello Tournament – the prestiged international youth competition previously known as the Toulon Tournament.

The Young Lions compete in the competition this month in Limoges, France and McCabe has made the squad.

Ryan Garry’s Young Lions will play the host nation, Japan and Portugal in the tournament between Wednesday, September 6 and Sunday, September 10.

McCabe will hope to impress and earn his place in the squad for the U17 World Cup which takes place in Indonesia in November and December.

Q&A Reminder

Reminder that I’m running a live Q&A at the same time as this live blog.

Questions so far have included topics such as signing a striker, signing a centre-back, Tom Cannon and more.

You can see the already-answered questions and/or ask your own by heading to the comments section of this article here.

At Plymouth

They had a deal in principle agreed with Boro to sign Josh Coburn on loan, but it was always on the understanding that Boro had to sign someone first. Carrick confirmed yesterday that the Richmond striker would be remaining on Teesside, and you can imagine how much of a blow that is to Plymouth

Registration deadline

One to be aware of with Bangura’s incoming signing. There is a deadline of 12:30 pm to register players on the day before a game for them to be available for that game.

It’s important to note that does NOT mean Boro have to announce it publically that Bangura has signed by 12.30 pm for him to be available tomorrow against QPR.

But they do have to have the necessary paperwork filed with the EFL for his registration.

No major drama if they weren’t to get that completed in time, with the likelihood of Bangura starting the day after he signed unlikely anyway. But he may be or have been on the bench for the QPR game if they get that one through in time.

Seny Dieng called up by Senegal

Turns out Seny Dieng is in the Senegal squad, which has just been released.

On Wednesday they released a list of players which they said were players summoned by coaches Pape Thiaw and Malick Daf in view of the Senegal-Rwanda meeting, which caused the confusion earlier in believing Dieng hadn’t been called up as he wasn’t on that list of players.

Anyway, another list now released by the Senegal FA and Dieng is part of the squad.

Paddy McNair ‘interest’

New from 90min Football. They claim that Luton Town remain interested in signing Paddy McNair today.

One of Boro’s top earners and with just 12 months remaining on his contract, it’s fair to say Boro would be open to selling at the right price.

That said, McNair has been an important squad player for Carrick since he arrived last October, despite the initial period out in the cold for the Northern Ireland international. With Fry’s injuries last term, McNair ended the season as the starting CB, and with injuries to Smith and Dijksteel at the start of this season, he’s been playing right-back this term. If he weren’t to leave today, he’d certainly still have a role to play, as far as Carrick is concerned.

Boro’s striker situation

Over in the Q&A, I was asked about Boro’s potential pursuit of a striker today, particularly given Josh Coburn was being considered for a loan move but will now stay. Here’s how things stand:

Certainly no secret that they would have liked another striker this summer. As you say, that’s why they considered sending Coburn out, because with another coming in he just wouldn’t have played enough.

That the agreed loan to Plymouth is now off and Carrick has confirmed Coburn will stay, it strongly suggests they don’t believe they will get a new striker today. They’ll monitor things throughout the day, but it has to be the right player, at the right price, and it would appear they don’t believe that will come today.

They seem to have taken the opinion that, beyond someone special, they’d rather keep an develop Coburn than loan someone from elsewhere. With Greenwood, Rogers and Crooks’ versatility, they do have other ST options.

Live Q&A

As well as the live blog here today, I’m also running a Q&A throughout the day.

Have any Boro-related questions? I will be popping in and out of this to answer questions right up until tonight’s deadline. Simply head to the comments section in this article where you can post your own question in the comments, or simply see the questions asked by others and my answers in the replies.

Hayden Hackney

The Boro midfielder, previously capped by Scotland U21s, has been called up to the England U21 squad.

Sitting down to talk with Hayden ahead of the new season, he said he’d made no decisions at that time on his international future, with his focus just on Boro. Rules permit players to switch allegiances up until the moment they make a competitive appearance for an international senior team.

State of play

As things stand with just over 12 and a half hours left of Deadline Day…

  • We await confirmation of Bangura’s incoming signing and Martin Payero’s exit to Udinese
  • Boro are continuing to monitor the market but aren’t desperate to add any more after Bangura. A striker was on their wishlist, but their Josh Coburn decision suggests they aren’t hopeful that any will be available who fit the bill at the right price
  • As for other exits, might anyone make a late bid for Paddy McNair? And what will happen with Hayden Coulson given then Bangura is arriving after Boro already signed Lukas Engel? Two potential exits to keep an eye on.

Squad numbers confirmed

Boro have confirmed that Lewis O’Brien will wear 28, and Sam Greenwood will wear the 29 shirt vacated by Chuba Akpom.

Tom Cannon

The Sun’s Alan Nixon now reporting that Leicester City will win the battle to sign Tom Cannon from Everton in a deal worth £6m.

We’ll see how that one develops. He was linked with Boro, who were credited with making a £4m move. Our sources suggest that is wide of the mark, as were reports claiming Norwich had bid £8m.

It would seem that Everton are very keen to offload the striker, but have been asking for too much as far as most interested clubs are concerned.

First Championship done deal of the day

England under-21 captain Taylor Harwood-Bellis has joined Southampton on loan from Manchester City.

Could be a busy day for the Saints. They’re said to be in for Sunderland duo Ross Stewart and Patrick Roberts too, in deals that could prove serious blows to Tony Mowbray’s side. Rather ironically, it’s Mogga’s brother Darren who is currently head of recruitment at St Mary’s.

How Wayne Rooney helped Boro’s decision to sign Lewis O’Brien

O’Brien spent the last four months on loan at DC United where Wayne Rooney is currently in charge. Naturally, Carrick got in touch with his former Man Utd team-mate then, when the possibility for Boro to sign O’Brien arose.

Carrick revealed:

“I had a chat with Wayne about Lewis and he had really good things to say. He really enjoyed his time over there and it was a new experience for him both as a player and a person, and adds to what he can bring to us. We’re looking forward to getting him settled in.”

You can read the full story here as Carrick discusses what O’Brien and fellow loan signing Sam Greenwood will bring.

What Carrick said on transfers heading into deadline day

At his pre-match press conference yesterday, Carrick – who wouldn’t comment on Alex Bangura – said:

“The window is still open so you can’t just turn your phone off and finish. Sometimes things are in our hands where you might push for certain things, other time things get thrown upon you because somebody is interested in one of your players.

“You have to expect the unexpected. We’re ready for anything. We feel we’re in a good place. We’re definitely not chasing and desperate for anything in terms of rash decisions. We feel like we’re in control. But yeah of course, you always have to be ready for something that’s thrown up in front of you.”

International call ups

Away from transfers just briefly, some Boro international call ups to note…

Darragh Lenihan is in the Ireland squad, and Paddy McNair is in the Northern Ireland squad.

Sammy Silvera has been called up by Australia for the first time, and is joined in Graham Arnold’s squad by Tom Glover and Riley McGree.

Interestingly, Seny Dieng has missed out on the Senegal squad, while reports in Finland say Marcus Forss suffered an injury on Tuesday evening and is out of their squad as a result.

Finally, a special mention to Middlesbrough Women’s star Ella Baker, who has been called up to the England U17s squad.

Current state of play

Morning folks. I’m awake (just about…) and ready to go. I’ll be with you right up until tonight’s 11 pm deadline.

So what are we expecting today then?

  • Alex Bangura’s move from SC Cambuur should be confirmed
  • Martin Payero’s move to Udinese should be confirmed
  • Bangura’s arrival could open the door to Hayden Coulson leaving – most likely on loan
  • Will anyone bid for Paddy McNair? With 12 months left on his contract, Boro are likely to be open to offers
  • As for any other incomings, Carrick has said Boro will monitor the market for as long as it’s open. They’re not chasing anything, but if the right deal cropped up they would move.

You can read a more detailed state of play here.

Carrick on Greenwood

Sam Greenwood became Middlesbrough’s 11th signing of the summer transfer window, with the versatile attacker joining on a season-long loan from Leeds United.

Boro boss Michael Carrick said: “Sam is a really talented player. He’s two-footed and he gives us greater flexibility. We’re looking forward to working with both him and Lewis O’Brien, and helping them develop as players.”
