THE 2023 GUBA Awards take place on Sunday 5th November in London. The founder of GUBA, Lady Dentaa Amoateng MBE, has an extraordinary life story.
During her life, she has been an actress and host of her own TV show, football agent and successful business woman helping other businesses across the African diaspora access funding, as well as being the founder of the internationally recognised GUBA Awards.
So how did this woman who originally trained to be a nurse end up rubbing shoulders with celebrities, royalty and African presidents?
Born in Ghana, Akosua Dentaa Amoateng, moved to the UK when she was five. After enjoying performing in plays and talent shows at school, she progressed to appearing in British TV dramas like EastEnders and Holby City. Not limiting herself to just acting, she also presented her own programme, The Dentaa Show, in 2006 which focussed on the African entertainment scene.

But she has always been about more than entertainment – her focus has always been to encourage an exchange of business, skills, and support between Africans in the diaspora and those on the continent.
Through her agency Speak to Dentaa, she has been agent of several British and Ghanaian footballers including Ghanaian international Asamoah Gyan, and premiership players including Christopher Samba. Additionally, she was instrumental in the Black Stars securing the services of Arsenal starlet, Emmanuel Frimpong in 2011.
But her crowning achievement is the establishment of the GUBA Awards. Initially established to acknowledge the contributions of British-Ghanaians, it has grown from an awards show into a social enterprise, dedicated to the advancement of Africans on the continent and in the diaspora through various socio–economic programs and initiatives. To this end, the event has now been hosted in various international locations, including the United States in 2019, Ghana in 2021, and Rwanda in 2022.
Lady Dentaa said: “GUBA stands for Grow, Unite, Build Africa. We seek to reward and celebrate excellence and innovation of African individuals and organisations throughout the diaspora that work towards the advancement, empowerment and progression of the African community.
“It is a delight to see this boosted with the worldwide popularity of African musical exports like Afrobeats and now Amapiano, proving Africa to be a cultural and economic powerhouse.”
The GUBA Awards ceremony takes place at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, on November 5th and this year’s theme is ‘Honouring Beacons of Excellence and Inspiration’.
