CHAMPAIGN — The McDonald’s restaurant at 1812 N. Neil St., C, will close Monday for several months as work gets underway to replace it with a new building.

“We will be closing this Monday the 12th, and we will tear down the entire store for a rebuild,” said Blake Linders, president of Effingham-based Linders Limited, the company that owns the McDonald’s at that location near Market Place Mall.

The city has issued a building permit for the $2.7 million rebuild.

Linders said the restaurant should reopen in three to four months with a double drive-thru and a playland.

“It should be state of the art and look amazing,” Linders said.

Linders said he and his son, Jacob, bought the restaurant in March 2022.

The North Neil Street building was too old to renovate and has just a single drive-thru and a playland that hasn’t been operational since the COVID-19 pandemic, he said.

Linders grew up in Sparta and went to the University of Illinois for a degree in civil engineering. His son currently lives in Champaign and provides a hands-on ownership presence for the business’ restaurants in the area.

In addition to the nine McDonald’s locations in C-U, Linders said the business owns locations in Rantoul, Arcola, Mattoon, Charleston, Effingham and Altamont.

“As far as other projects, we have a couple small projects going on later this year in Rantoul and Urbana but nothing else until 2024 as we look to update our Green Street location,” Linders said.
