In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese addressed the massive theatrical success of the Barbenheimer phenomenon, which led Barbie and Oppenheimer to become this year’s highest-grossing movies. Despite admitting that he hasn’t gotten the chance to see both films yet, Scorsese has nothing but praises for Barbenheimer, which he described as “something special” and “wonderful.”
“I do think that the combination of Oppenheimer and Barbie was something special,” He said. “It seemed to be, I hate that word, but the perfect storm. It came about at the right time. And the most important thing is that people went to watch these in a theatre. And I think that’s wonderful.”
He continued, “The way it fit perfectly — a film with such entertainment value, purely with the bright colours — and a film with such severity and strength, and pretty much about the danger of the end to our civilisation — you couldn’t have more opposite films to work together. It does offer some hope for a different cinema to emerge, different from what’s been happening in the last 20 years, aside from the great work being done in independent cinema.”
Barbenheimer Dominated the Summer Box Office
Despite being each other’s major competition at the box office due to their shared theatrical release date, Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie movie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer biopic were able to share the spotlight after the audiences decided to make July 21 a special double feature event for Barbenheimer.
During its theatrical run, the Margot Robbie-led fantasy comedy was able to earn a worldwide gross of over $1.4 billion against, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2023. In addition to Robbie, the Mattel film was also led by Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Helen Mirren, and more.
Meanwhile, Cillian Murphy-led epic drama also broke several box office records. This includes becoming the second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, with a global gross of over $930 million. The film also starred Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, and more.
