Patriot homes names new CEO, raises $60M
Patriot Family Homes, a veteran-owned business that operates short-term rentals at 400 locations across 13 states including Chattanooga, has appointed Christian Hempell as president and chief operating officer. Hempbell brings 30 years of hospitality experience, having held executive operating and commercial roles at hospitality technology innovator Sonder and global brand platform InterContinental Hotels Group.
The appointment follows the completion of a $60 million equity investment in the company from TRT Holdings and Miramar Holdings. The funds will be used to acquire, renovate, and operate single-family home rentals, as well as invest in infrastructure and management talent to accelerate growth in the fastest growing hospitality segment.
“Our strategy serves guests in smaller cities and suburban markets through a portfolio of single-family homes to meet underserved short-term lodging needs’ Joe Riley, the company’s founder and CEO, said in an announcement this week. “By securing this round of funding and attracting Christian to the company, we can accelerate the growth of our brand and operations to remain the leading multi-regional operator of economy short-term rentals.”
Judge says FTX not required to release customer names
The judge presiding over the bankruptcy of cryptocurrency exchange FTX Trading is allowing the company to maintain a veil of secrecy over the names of its customers and creditors.
Judge John Dorsey ruled Wednesday that FTX could withhold the names from public disclosure for another three months, noting that it’s still unclear how many of the company’s 9 million customers are also creditors.
Attorneys for the U.S. bankruptcy trustee in Delaware and several major media outlets challenged the secrecy, saying disclosure of creditor information is a basic tenet of bankruptcy law.
Dorsey said he would hold a status conference on Jan. 20 on whether FTX can segregate the names of individual creditors who are not customers from creditors who also are customers.
Lawyers for FTX have argued that its customer list is both a valuable asset and confidential commercial information, and that secrecy is needed to protect FTX accounts from potential theft and to ensure that potential competitors do not “poach” FTX customers.
In an effort to avoid litigation, FTX, along with its official committee of unsecured creditors, asked Dorsey for permission to keep the names of individual customers and addresses of institutional customers secret only for the next six months, subject to their rights to seek an extension.

The company says the park will include attractions, interactive shows and opportunities for meet-and-greets with characters. The company also announced a new permanent entertainment experience in Las Vegas that it says will “bring to life Universal’s vast library of classic horror films and today’s most terrifying tales.”
The company didn’t give a timetable for when the projects will be completed.
Western Union resumes money transfers to Cuba
Western Union says it has resumed remittance services between the U.S. and Cuba in a limited capacity after two years of the essential economic lifeline being severed.
The step could offer Cuban families key economic support during a time of record economic crisis in the Caribbean nation, one of a number of factors fueling a migratory exodus from the island. Western Union company stopped the money transfers in 2020 after then-President Donald Trump tightened long-standing U.S. on Cuba.
The Biden administration has loosed a handful of the Trump-era restrictions, including remittance payments, but has still left many in place.
