New development on Calumet
A developer plans to create a mix of commercial, office, restaurant and retail space at the site of the former Manitowoc Area Visitors & Convention Bureau on Calumet Avenue near Festival Foods and I-43.
The city council approved the sale for $1.6 million last year. The Illinois-based GMX Real Estate Group Acquisitions LLC has the site under contract while it conducts due diligence and tenant recruitment, according to Adam Tegen, City of Manitowoc’s economic development director.
Due diligence is expected to wrap up at the end of the month, he said.
The developer hasn’t provided city leaders with a final list of projects yet, Tegen said, adding, “We expect projects to start in summer or fall of 2023.”
Precision Autoworks replaces PJ’s Auto
Nicholas Orth now owns the former PJ’s Auto, 2904 Calument Ave., and has changed the name to Precision Autoworks.
Orth said it was important for him to keep the same workers.
“I want our customers to know that the mechanics they’ve trusted for many years are still here to provide the great service they’ve always gotten here,” he said in a news release. “I’m excited to add my management to this operation, which will allow our mechanics to spend more time working on vehicles. I also like to get out there and help on the floor when needed.”
Orth owned and operated an auto mechanics shop in Two Rivers and jumped on the chance to buy the Calumet site when the former owner decided to retire. He was looking for the additional space, expertise and equipment that came with the former PJ’s Auto.
He worked with Progress Lakeshore to plan and complete the move.
“Never give up on your vision,” he said. “There were some hard times in this process, but if you stick with it and work hard at it, you can make something of your dream.”
Pine River debuts new cheddar spread
Pine River Cheese Spread, based in Newton, debuted its limited-anniversary edition 60-Month Cheddar at the Winter Fancy Food Show held over the weekend in Las Vegas.
The cheese spread was created to commemorate the company’s 60th anniversary in 2023.
“The five-year-old Wisconsin Cheddar gives this spread an extra creamy texture that has a rich cheddar flavor with a slightly tangy bite,” said Phil Lindemann, Pine River CEO. “The art of cheese spread-making comes in the aging and blending process. We know which ages of cheese to combine to get the best flavor and we’ve been following the same recipe since my father started the company 60 years ago.”
