Beyond the Comfort Zone

The Manchester Global MBA changed my approach towards business. Not only did it sharpen my abilities to read business situations more objectively and with a more critical eye, it gave me that crucial push to locate possibilities beyond the status quo. These amount to more than concrete skills – by the end of the degree, I had achieved a mindset shift. The practical nature of the programme  –  aided by a flexible structure – made it easy to incorporate skills learnt into the workplace, but it was the ample opportunity to connect with colleagues from across the world that proved game-changing. Two things stood out for me while working alongside a cohort hailing from all parts of the world – their passion for excellence and willingness to go the extra mile for the team. Even though I never got to meet some of them in person, we accomplished great results, learned a lot from each other and thoroughly enjoyed our time together.

Practical Lessons with Global Edge

I relished many things about the Global MBA, including the way it prioritized practical experience, but most of all for delivering a truly global learning experience. From collaborating with a diversified student body to workshops held around the world, this MBA has resulted in game-changing shifts to my mindset. Bottom line – I’ve had a confidence boost when it comes to navigating the digital marketing industry I’ve been immersed in for 10+ years, and am more inclined to keep pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

Out of many modules, Practical Finance left the deepest impression as it’s chock-full of novel experiences. This includes a thorough introduction to the functions of a Bloomberg terminal as well as an SIM workshop exploring the intricacies of the Stock Exchange. Taking place on the Manchester Campus, this also allowed me to connect with professionals from all corners of the globe – all the while gaining insight into international markets.

All these experiences were borne out by real impact on my career – I’ve changed jobs twice since starting the degree, with opportunities for growth always beckoning.

The Perfect Blend of Theory and Practice

For me, the Manchester Global MBA works because of how seamlessly it combines theory with practical application. The case studies-based Manchester Method in particular was the perfect fit for someone like me – an information infrastructure consultant looking to bolster my portfolio of business skills in concrete and specific ways. Lessons on digital marketing – including marketing strategy development – as well as deep dives on global trends both proved instrumental in accelerating my consulting practice. The ability to gain international exposure while continuing to work in Japan is also something I treasure.

Since completing the MBA, my career has taken off in exciting new directions, including the chance to join a global consulting firm. These fruitful results would not have been possible without ample support from my family – which, coupled with rigorous time management, helped me stay on top of various work, academic and personal commitments. In fact, sharing my schedule in advance with my family was what made the real difference!

A Skill-Set Refresh

Hoping to build upon my 15 years of experience in global pharmaceutical and consumer electronics operations, I actively searched for an overseas MBA programme that could steer my career towards senior management. In the Manchester Global MBA, I found a winning combination of breadth, depth and flexibility. Although the pandemic radically altered the way that lessons were conducted, with online classes replacing face-to-face lessons, it also pushed me into gaining other skills, e.g. the ability to effectively collaborate with others digitally. Overall, it had been a fantastic experience.

The degree’s practical core meant lessons were instantly transferable to the workplace, while the focus on contemporary topics and recent events kept everything engaging. Case in point – my new-found skills on financial analysis and business accounting proved instrumental during top-level discussions on investment and new product launches. Post-graduation, it only took me a few months to secure the position in a global biopharmaceutical company I had been aiming for – a push which moved me to a new role that will help transform how cancer treatment is delivered and improve patient outcomes globally.

Igniting Pathways Towards Professional Growth

Having had a highly positive experience studying for my bachelor’s degree at the University of Manchester a decade ago, the University’s Global MBA was a natural pick. What made an immediate impression was how invigorating the learning environment was, as well as the programme’s refreshing emphasis on the practical. As my academic journey progressed, I gained in managerial smarts and strategic skills, and these resets to my leadership style helped to boost my team’s efficiency. Ultimately, I was rewarded with an expanded role at work that encompassed the regional, on top of new responsibilities.

All this would’ve been impossible without the in-built flexibility of the programme, which allowed me to choose the most suitable time slot for lectures and workshops. With good time management, I easily got the most out of my MBA experience – despite navigating a demanding job and various family commitments.

A Powerful Career Springboard

Hitting pause on my career to pursue further studies, I found the perfect fit in the Manchester Global MBA, a programme known for its rigorous academics, diverse cohort and practical focus. Not only was the curriculum packed with lessons that translated directly to the workplace, it was flexible enough to let me effectively juggle work, family and studies – even while I was studying for an International Diploma in GRC, and amidst changes to my career.

My biggest takeaway was a fuller view of how a business organization could be effectively run, and a wider-ranging portfolio of skills. Specifically, the programme enhanced my ability to identify issues as they arise, to always look for root causes, and to ask important questions. As a result, I’m now better able to make informed decisions.

Gratifyingly, I was approached by AIG and offered my current role six months before completing the programme.  While still compliance-related, it’s a more expansive role with access to a richer professional network. It’s brought to the fore everything I’ve gained from the MBA, including better communication skills, a more incisive way of thinking, and a greater sense of global awareness.

Centering Ethics in Entrepreneurial Endeavors

One of the highlights of the Global MBA programme was the “Learning by Doing” teaching method at the core of the curriculum, and the emphasis on teamwork. This combination of practicality and openness fitted perfectly with my own vision of business. Not only did the programme add to my arsenal of skills as an entrepreneur within a pioneering industry,  it’s also transformed the way I communicate with stakeholders. More importantly, it’s given me the push to place ethics at the center of my leadership, whether through increasing employee compensation or by emphasizing collaboration over competition in the workplace.

It was challenging balancing work, studies and family commitments, but my family’s support and understanding made all the difference, as did the particular synergy I experienced through studying alongside an inspiring cohort. The built-in flexibility of the programme was a definite plus. While the MBA didn’t lead to major changes in my career, it contributed to my professional development in a myriad of ways while opening up clear opportunities for my firm’s growth.

Gearing for the C-Suite

The Manchester Global MBA is ideal for anyone seeking a “real MBA” – a programme which offers concrete and challenging lessons rather than allowing you to coast by on attendance alone. Besides a practical curriculum chock-full of relevant lessons, its offer of a multinational learning environment was extremely helpful in filling the gaps in my experience . As someone who is aiming for top management yet craves more global exposure,  I  appreciated how my classmates came from a diversity of cultural and professional backgrounds, which gave me insight on leading diverse teams. Studying alongside them was very much like being part of a mini multinational corporation!

The flexibility of the course also made a real difference. With several business trips on my schedule during the long quarantine periods, online workshops and lectures became essential in keeping my progress on track. While my job title has not changed since starting the MBA, it’s prepped me mentally for further challenges while equipping me with every essential for the next level – the C-suite.

Fostering Effective Leadership

I was looking for a fresh perspective on leadership when I embarked on the Global MBA. As someone with a background in plastics engineering whose role expanded into marketing as I moved up the management ladder, I’m always looking to fill any gaps I might have in these areas so as to lead more effectively. Without fail, this programme has allowed me to bolster my strategic thinking and decision-making skills while giving me the push to think more creatively – particularly in challenging situations demanding instant responses. Its solution-oriented approach also left an impact, as any insight gained from class was almost always instantly applicable to the workplace.

The flexible nature of the programme meant that I could easily fit my studies into a hectic schedule and still have time for personal commitments. For me, expert time management – with support from the MBA’s vast array of digital resources – made all the difference.

Broadening Business Horizons

For me, this Global MBA delivered on two crucial counts – adding to my store of business knowledge while actively expanding my professional network.  My experience was made all the more seamless by the hybrid learning environment, which combined face-to-face workshops with virtual learning opportunities. Tailor-made for someone like me whose schedule is perennially packed and whose working hours are uncertain, it’s great to be able to fall back on recordings of lessons while still having the opportunity to go out and network.

Practicality has always been touted as a key part of the programme, and the lessons lived up to the hype. In particular, I was especially taken with modules centered on motivation theory, a concept that helped illuminate what drives us –  and our work performances. It’s  these nuggets of knowledge – coupled with a system which allows for a constant exchange of knowledge – that add up to a learning experience with lasting impact.

Targeted Learning with Real-World Impact

With the strong global positioning and diverse cohort of Alliance Manchester Business School, the Manchester Global MBA has always been my top pick. It delivered on multiple fronts by giving me the opportunity to study alongside individuals from a variety of cultural and professional backgrounds. Moreover, the programme effectively broadened my horizons while providing a plethora of networking opportunities.

I appreciated the curriculum’s practical focus. Blending broad business knowledge with targeted skills applicable to real-life workplace scenarios, it served my professional needs precisely. Particularly memorable was the Leading and Management in a Global Environment workshop, which gave me an ESG-based framework from which to help my company grow. The year-long Live Business Project, which explored work-family struggles faced by working mothers, was another highlight. Although most of these lessons were delivered virtually due to the pandemic, my learning process was seamless.

Personally and professionally, the Global MBA reaped concrete benefits. Not only did it equip me with better problem-solving and decision-making skills, it’s given me that standout quality in a competitive job market – global edge. Most crucially, it’s propelled me towards an exciting new role with higher position at a new company after graduation.

Multifaceted and Multicultural

As someone who’s taken on various managerial roles within the technology sector for over fifteen years – a career that’s brought me into frequent contact with teams and companies from different parts of the world –  the Manchester Global MBA was a natural pick for me on account of its multicultural focus. The flexible programme structure, which included both virtual and  pre-recorded lessons fitting easily round a packed schedule, was also key.

The degree did not disappoint. Not only was it highly practical, it was also very much focused on the collective experiences we as students brought to the table. A major part of learning came from picking each other’s brains and sharing the breadth of our professional perspectives – an exercise made all the more illuminating by the incredible diversity of the cohort. Live case studies anchoring the curriculum as well as a live business project were also crucial in helping me refocus and reorient myself as a project manager, especially as I prepared to re-join the corporate world after an extended break.

A Hands-On Approach to Business

With over a decade’s sales and marketing experience in the chemical and manufacturing industry, I decided to level up with an MBA. The Manchester Global MBA not only met my expectations – it exceeded them by a mile. What impressed me most about the curriculum was its practical nature. Combining theory, case studies-led workshops and hands-on assignments, the programme managed to precisely address the unique challenges faced by business leaders in today’s fast-changing and increasingly competitive business environment. By enhancing my strategic thinking, decision-making and leadership skills, it’s made an immediate impact on my sales performance at work while positioning me for long-term career advancement.

Another highlight for me was the diversity of the cohort. Hailing from multiple cultural and professional backgrounds, my classmates were a constant source of inspiration and support, not least because they constantly pushed me to consider every issue from a new perspective. What made the MBA work for me on an everyday level, though, was definitely its flexible structure, which allowed me to reap the most out of my academic journey.
