A constitutional lawyer, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, has urged members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to provide necessary support to President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda amid the economic downturn facing the country.
Abayomi, who is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council for Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko in Ondo State, emphasised the importance of implementing reforms that would directly benefit the Nigerian people.
The lawyer, in an open letter titled, “Open Letter to the Leaders and Ministers of the Republic,” a copy given to newsmen in Akure, the Ondo State capital, stressed the need for the government to prioritise policies and initiatives that would alleviate the hardship faced by citizens. He said the reforms should be aimed at improving strategic sectors of the economy.
“As a worker from the beginning in the enterprise for a better Nigerian nation, I will continue to wish you well but solely on the condition of support when the government does well and condemn when it errs.
“The present government to which you are now a minister or leader must at this point face the two sectors with a sober challenge if the government wants to succeed.
“Now depending on the leaders of government, Nigeria has a new chance for her evolution with a change mantra in the air. This is what I believe President Bola Tinubu described as renewed hope but what I really prefer to call a new hope.
“What Nigeria urgently needs now is a bold new age of leadership responsibility and serious growth inspired by painful sacrifices of the people. Work hard, work hastily, be honest and determined with the President whose wife already assured us that they have enough to live on and will not misuse public money,” Abayomi stressed.
He also cautioned them to avoid misuse and abuse of public office and that they should work to build a great nation and be deliberate to think high, adding: “The people of Nigeria are getting not just tired out, but very weary and exhausted by leadership failures in this land.”
So, turn your eyes and your heart away from the peoples’ money and face the serious business of diligent and honest service.
“Avoid stealing public money, and avoid corruption that have typified public life in Nigeria. Be different and unique as everything belongs to the world.
“If today you ask Nigerians their views about this nation, they will tell you that the country was set back by past governments and leaders who blighted the great chances the nation had to fly like Eagle.”
