Freja Offshore AB, a joint venture between Mainstream Renewable Power and Swedish floating wind specialist Hexicon AB (STO:HEXI), on Tuesday unveiled plans to build an up to 2.5-GW floating offshore wind farm in the Swedish economic zone.
The duo has submitted an application with the Swedish Ministry of Climate and Business, saying it expects the project to help lower electricity prices for households and businesses in the region. According to it, the selected site in the Baltic Sea, off Sweden’s eastern coast, has “low to no visibility from land.”
The Dyning complex is set to be installed around 45 km southeast of Oxelosund municipality in Sodermanland County. Once in operation, it will be able to generate up to 10 TWh of electricity annually, which will exceed the total power consumption of both Sormland and Ostergotland. The two regions are expected to double their electricity demand over the next 20 years as the decarbonisation of the industrial sector steps up.
“Sormland and Ostergotland are in great need of increased electricity production to reduce prices and meet the electricity demands of transitioning to low-carbon industry,” said Magnus Hallman, CEO of Freja Offshore.
Dyning is the third application lodged by Freja Offshore this year for offshore wind in the Swedish part of the southern Baltic Sea. The company has already submitted plans for the 2-GW Cirrus and 2.5-GW Mareld schemes.
