Italy stands as a pivotal hub for LVMH’s manufacturing. This commitment is substantiated by the French luxury conglomerate’s ongoing investments in the country, where it expects to hire 2,500 artisans and other skilled craftspeople by the end of 2025. The news was made on Thursday, November 30th, in Florence, during the ‘Show Me’ event honouring the company’s illustrious workmanship.
LVMH, the world’s greatest luxury conglomerate, invests around 100 million euros in the peninsula each year. With a presence comprised of six brands and 35 manufacturing facilities, it employs 12,000 people, 7,000 of whom are craftsmen and creatives operating across 35 sites and approximately 250 boutiques. According to Alexandre Boquel, the director of excellent craftsmanship, who praised Italy’s exquisite craftsmanship during the third Italian edition of ‘Show Me’ in Florence, the group employs 200,000 people in the country through a network of 5,000 suppliers and subcontractors.
Through exhibitions and testimonials from students from the Institute of Excellent Craftsmanship (IME), the programme highlighted the remarkable competence of some of LVMH’s iconic brands, including Bulgari, Loro Piana, Pucci, Acqua di Parma, Thelios, and Belmond.
The IME, which was founded in 2014, strives to pass on knowledge and inspire young people to pursue careers in the arts. Its Italian division, which opened in 2017, has so far successfully trained 730 pupils.
Despite LVMH’s continuous development and increased demand for its products, the company is facing a serious labour shortage, mirroring the suffering of the whole luxury industry. According to a Comité Colbert assessment, the artisanal industry in France faces a 20,000-job gap each year. The disparity is particularly pronounced in Italy. Altagamma, which represents high-end Italian enterprises, predicts a demand for 346,000 artisans in the next five years, with over 40,000 needed specifically in fashion and leather goods.
