Construction employment on Long Island increased slightly in May, rising for the 10th straight month.

Nassau and Suffolk counties added 500 construction jobs from May 2022 to May 2023, a 1 percent year-over-year gain, rising from 81,800 to 82,300, according to a report from the Associated General Contractors of America.

Regionally, the number of construction jobs in New York City was up 7 percent, gaining 9,600 jobs from May 2022 to May 2023, increasing from 143,500 to 153,100.

Construction employment in the Orange/Rockland/Westchester area was up 1 percent, adding 400 jobs from May 2022 to May 2023 and rising from 45,300 to 45,700.

Between May 2022 and May 2023, construction employment rose in 230 metro areas, declined in 79 metro areas and remained flat in 49 areas, according to the AGCA report.

“While nearly two-thirds of metro areas added construction jobs in the last 12 months, the total would have been higher if contractors could find qualified workers,” Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist, said in a written statement. “But with a construction unemployment rate in May of only 3.5 percent, there are very few suitable candidates available in many markets.” Metro areas adding the most construction jobs over the last year include the Dallas area, which gained 11,600 jobs for an 8 percent rise; the Columbus, Ohio area, adding 6,100 for a 13 percent gain; and the Atlanta area, which added 6,000 jobs for a 4 percent gain.

The metro areas seeing the largest drops in construction employment from May 2022 to May 2023 include the Houston area, which lost 5,400 jobs for a 2 percent drop; the St. Louis area, which dropped 5,100 jobs for a 7 percent decline; and the Los Angeles area, which dropped 4,700 jobs for a 3 percent decline.
