A long-established funeral directors have expanded their business with the acquisition of a former women’s shelter opposite their current premises.

Armstrongs Funeral Service, founded by Nick Armstrong in 1997, has begun using the building in St Andrew’s Street North, Bury St Edmunds, after receiving council permission in April.

The business remains at its original location on the same road, but Mr Armstrong said the new premises would be used for taking additional appointments and managing extra clients.

Mr Armstrong said: “It’s important for us, as a family business – not one of these international chains – to offer the best possible service we can. It’s not just about profits.

“Since we started in 1997, we’ve grown to having over 16 people working with us.

“It will give us another arranging room, so that, if another family comes in, rather than having to put the appointment off, we can go across the road and see them straight away.

“It’ll have a positive impact on our families, because we’ll have more space. It’ll just be easier to deal with people.

“If we look after the families, then the business will be okay – that’s always been my priority.

“Families come first, and then, as, long as we’re looking after them, they’re recommending us, everything will play out alright.”
