Folks who want to start a small business in Long Beach, as well as owners looking to improve their operations, can now enroll in an educational program to learn the tools and skills needed to run a successful company.
The Entrepreneur and Small Business Education Series, organized by the Downtown Long Beach Alliance and CSULB’s Institute of Innovation & Entrepreneurship, is free to attend for existing and potential local business owners, and for Cal State Long Beach students.
The cost of attending the approximately two-month workshop series has been valued at $1,350, according to the DLBA website.
“What we are trying to do is to bring some support to entrepreneurs in the city,” Wade Martin, CSULB professor of economics and director of the Institute for Innovation & Entrepreneurship, said in a promotional video.
The program is open to anybody in the city who wants to participate, Martin said.
Program enrollees will learn concepts harvested through practical experience, and get advice on marketing plans, building financial tools, assembling a work team and what legal structure they should have.
The series, which includes weekly workshops, will begin on Saturday, Jan. 20, with “The Value of a Business Plan,” which CSULB lecturer Mitch McNicol is scheduled to teach at Studio One Eleven, 245 E. Third St.
The program’s following classes are:
- Jan. 27: “All Things Accounting.”
- Feb. 3: “Digital Marketing 101 + Finding Funding.”
- Feb. 10: “Writing a Marketing Plan.”
- Feb. 17: “HR Basics & Putting it All Together.”
- Feb. 24: “Where to Locate & Lease Negotiations.”
- March 9: “Building Your Strategic Plan.”
- March 16: “How to Get Funding.”
- March 23: “Putting it All Together.”
Those who finish the program will receive a CSULB-issued certificate of accomplishment.
The university will also offer them an opportunity to apply for three months of “in-kind” business development services with the Fuller Management Corporation, a private firm that offers customized business coaching, advising and development to organizations of no more than 100 employees.
People interested in the Entrepreneur and Small Business Education Series can register by filling out an online form on the DLBA website.
