London City airport has scrapped the requirement for passengers to limit liquids in their hand luggage to 100ml after introducing CT scanners.
The move by the Docklands-based airport from Tuesday (4 April) means that travellers will no longer have to remove liquids, laptops, tablets and other electronic items from the carry-on bags when going through security. Under the new rules, passengers can now carry liquid of up to two litres in their bags.
London City is the second UK airport to end the 100ml liquid rule – Teesside airport in north-east England has already made a similar move after installing scanners.
The rule on liquids in hand luggage has been in place since 2006 when it was introduced due to fears of an imminent terrorist attack using liquid in bottles to blow up aircraft.
Other airports are set to follow suit in the coming months after the UK government set a June 2024 deadline for them to introduce the new scanners, which can check hand baggage using high-resolution 3D images.
Robert Sinclair, London City airport’s CEO, said: “The good news for anyone planning a holiday or a business trip is that we will be the first mainstream UK airport to offer a fully CT security experience.
“The new lanes will not only cut hassle, but also cut queuing times, which I know passengers will love.”
