“The First Amendment really matters,” Cheney said.

Cheney, who was recently named a professor in practice at the University of Virginia Center for Politics, sat down for a conversation with Center for Politics Director Larry Sabato on Wednesday night.

“When you think about how high the bar is for defamation in the circumstance like this, against a media company, it should be high,” she said.

The two made sure to address Tuesday’s massive settlement.

“Obviously Dominion’s evidence was so strong that Fox was willing to pay $787 million, rather than have to go through that trial,” said Cheney.

The voting systems company alleged Fox promoted pro-Trump conspiracy theories to benefit its business, some of which included potentially damaging information about the company’s technology.

“The extent to which Fox was putting on information that they knew to be false, it did real, real damage,” she said.

Cheney used to work for the news channel, but now says she has real concerns.

“What I’ve watched happen there and how dangerous it is,” she said. “Hosts, like Tucker Carlson, who on a pretty regular basis, is spouting Vladimir Putin’s talking points and that ought to give people real pause.”

Cheney thinks that the channel’s hosts should be apologizing to Americans.

“They’ve done real damage because they have peddled the lie knowingly, there’s no question,” she said.
