Spanish opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo slammed acting prime minister Pedro Sánchez for contemplating an amnesty for Catalan separatists, as lawmakers prepared for a vote set to confirm that Feijóo’s conservatives cannot form a government.
Feijóo, leader of the right-of-centre People’s party, assailed Sánchez for putting “personal interests” ahead of the country, in the most crucial week in parliament since an inconclusive July general election, which left both main parties short of the majority needed to take office.
The result has handed a central role to regional parties whose votes will be decisive.
A controversial amnesty sought by Catalan separatists, covering leaders and activists involved in a failed 2017 push for independence, was “neither legally nor ethically acceptable”, Feijóo said in a speech to lawmakers on Tuesday.
