Former Ryder Cup players Victor Dubuisson and Jeff Overton, and former PGA Tour and DP World Tour winners Jason Dufner, Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño and Alvaro Quiroz are among a host of familiar names that have signed up to play in next week’s inaugural LIV Golf Promotions event which will see the top three finishers earn a spot in the 48-man LIV Golf League for 2024.
The three-day, four-round tournament is being held at Abu Dhabi Golf Club from December 8-10 and will feature 70 players, with two-time European Tour winner Lucas Bjerregaard and two-time PGA Tour winner Kyle Stanley also among the starting line-up.
The format of the event will see 60 players will tee off in round one on December 8, and those who finish in the top 20 and ties advance to Saturday’s second round, where the scores will be reset, and the field will be joined by a category of players who automatically qualified for day two of competition. The top 20 players (after tiebreakers) following round two will advance to the final day of competition, where scores will reset once more for a 36-hole shootout. After which the top three finishers will receive spots in the LIV Golf League for 2024, while players finishing fourth to 10th place will earn full exemption for all events on The International Series sanctioned by the Asian Tour.
Commenting on the make-up of the field, LIV Golf Commissioner Greg Norman said: “LIV Golf Promotions creates an open pathway for players to compete in the LIV Golf League, and the interest shown in the event’s inaugural year reinforces the significance of these new opportunities for the sport. There is exceptional talent from all corners of the globe and LIV Golf is establishing a platform for these current and rising stars of the game to build their careers in new, exciting ways. LIV Golf’s future is bright, and our anticipation grows to see which competitors will be part of this game-changing league in 2024.”
The field has an average age of 31, including 38 players under the age of 30. Among the youngest players are 21-year-old Max Kennedy and 23-year-old Ryan Griffin, both from Ireland, and both of whom played in this year’s Palmer Cup. The line-up also includes 22-year-old Samson-Yunhe Zheng from China, the field’s highest-ranked amateur and the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship runner-up.
Additionally, former LIV Golf players Sihwan Kim, Chase Koepka, Jed Morgan and James Piot, who were all relegated at the end of the 2023 season, as well as reserve Laurie Canter, will be trying to reclaim their LIV Golf status.
The tournament is being live streamed on LIV Golf Plus, the LIV Golf YouTube channel, and broadcast partners around the world, on Friday and Saturday, December 8-9, from 8am-12pm, and Sunday, December 10 from 8.30am-1pm. (all UK time).
